well it looks like the government is shafting me on my house. they had the paperwork to contact HR to verify my employment, and it never happened. So now that we're out on Christmas break, and no one will be at the college until January, they can't verify I work there until then...which means no loan.
good game.
and people want this government to run healthcare? 2% of the population already has government run healthcare, and let me tell ya, IT SUCKS. The military make up that 2%, and from experience, it's not good at all. In fact, it's pretty terrible. And if they can't manage a measly 2 percent, how are they gonna handle any more than that??
Blows my mind.
anyway, i'm being told we might close anyway this monday. yay.

Hi there. I'm primarily a bassist, though I do also play guitar, cello and Arabic oud. Coming from a cello background and loving melodic bass, I tend to be drawn to instruments in the bass and cello ranges. I currently have a cheapie Epiphone Les Paul tuned CGDFAE, but I'm unhappy with the tone of the low C and G strings.
I've been thinking of buying a guitar and tuning it primarily to fifths. I thought a baritone-scale guitar might be best suited to the task since it would impart a great deal of tension to the low strings. Remembering that Agile guitars tend to be inexpensive and rated fairly well, I took a look at their newest models. Turns out that they make eight string guitars now!
Now, I'm not interested in playing down-tuned metal (though I do love me some Meshuggah and Sunn O)))). I'm currently playing guitar in a drum-machine-driven shoegazy/fuzzy project that mixes sparkly clean and high-gain fuzz tones. My interest in having an extended-range instrument is being able to switch between bass function and lead function with little effort. I'd also like to be able to do a little tasteful two-hand tapping a-la a Warr guitar.
The eight-string guitars sold by Agile have a 28+ inch scale length which should provide plenty of tension for the low strings. I'm interested in trying tunings such as C c G g D d A a (a mandocello-like tuning with octave-doubled strings and super-thin high-A string!), F A C E G D A E (close-spaced bass strings for interesting drone possibilities and violin-like melody strings), and E B E G D G B E (nice big droney open chords).
Now, since I'm interested in tapping, I'll need a very stable and adjustable neck in order to allow me to dial in a low and buzz-free action. I'm interested in clear and present tones that respond well to distortion when necessary.
Any thoughts? Should I look elsewhere? Has anyone here played extended-range instruments for a while and kinda stopped doing so for some reason or another?

Tubgirl staggered and finally collapsed. "You...you have defeated me," she gasped.
"No," Fart-chan replied. "It was you who defeated yourself."
- 03:21 The worst thing about the #RifftraxLive event tonight? Not enough @alyankovic. The best part? Everything else. Available at Food Markets! #

My first block class is currently taking an exam. They are all super nervous because there is a grammar section on the exam that seems to throw them for a loop: gerunds, participles, and infinitives. We have discussed and discussed, done examples out the wazoo, and looked at powerpoints on verbals. I know that they know the material; it's just a matter of them having the confidence to complete the grammar. :)
Some of my sweet little kiddies got me candles, stay-at-home socks, and candies. :)

I'm not sure if this is the place for this type of question, but if it isnt feel free to delete me or point me in the right direction.
I have to play Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) tomorrow for class (as a final) and I am having trouble with it. My instructor wants me to play along with the song while it's playing in windows media player at the slowest speed it can go (.5). I still can't do it!
I can't seem to differentiate the chords while just listening. Any pointers, tips, etc? Thanks in advance!

I made it past the dreaded third post (my blogs usually die after that), so I figure it's officially sticking around for a while. I won't be posting my stupid-ass hockey sketches here any more (rejoice, some of you), so please bookmark that if you want to keep up with that ridiculousness.

What was most useful about your answers is that it convinced me it was worth trying some significantly heavier picks - I'd always assumed that I'd need/prefer a lighter, more flexible pick; and I'd always assumed my complete inability to do anything decent with one was because I'm just a bit plectrum-disabled. Turns out I actually prefer a smaller, slightly heavier pick (1mm-1.5mm) for most things, and a thinner, larger pick for strumming; and although I need practice I'm not completely useless with a pick after all - I've just used entirely the wrong pick in the past.
The guy behind the counter at the guitar shop was amused at the assortment of picks I bought - a dozen of the most varied I could find - until I explained why I was doing it. He laughed and said, "You should find at least one you like in that lot."
The downside (or up side? *haha*) to going in to the guitar shop to buy picks is my husband came with me. He used to play electric bass, and he tried a couple of acoustic basses in the shop... and now we're going to have to find a thousand bucks or so to buy him one. =D
